On the Way to Becoming a 3D Grooming Artist | My Story | Episode 9 - 2017 - Grooming and Lookdev for The Light Within | Elementalist Lux - LoL (2017 - TrizzFX, Riot Games)
I remember back in 2016, when I was just starting to work with hair, I dreamed like crazy about working on some epic cinematic for League of Legends by Riot Games! =) At that time, I was really into LoL and admired every new cinematic released for that universe.
In 2017, I moved to Batumi for 6 months, and it was a pure gamble! I went there almost without money, hoping to land another freelance project. In fact, I had just delivered my previous job - actually, a test task for Disney, for which I was paid $1300. And it was with that money that I went to Batumi! hahaha.
That month was incredibly stressful, and I can clearly remember the wild joy and excitement I felt. First, I realized that thoughts really do become reality and the Universe does hear us. Second, I got the job exactly at the moment when my family had already lost hope and said: “That’s it… we’re going back.”
And third - it was a cinematic project for League of Legends from Riot Games themselves!!! I was literally running and jumping around the apartment, screaming with happiness. The emotions were through the roof. The whole team approached the creation of this cinematic with incredible love =) You could really feel it.
For this cinematic, I made 2 hairstyles in Ornatrix for 3ds Max.
As of now, the video already has 9.8 million views. Back then, I was working with TrizzFX and Riot Games. The animation and simulation were done by Yoonjong Song. It was my first experience working with Koreans, and I still admire them to this day! =) Really talented guys.
By the way, back then I was given a ready-made hair sculpt, and I used the HairFromMeshStrips modifier to generate strands from it. After that, I refined them with Edit Guides and other modifiers. So it was more of a sculpting workflow rather than a guides-based approach.
For shaders it was simple - Vray Hair Mtl with V-Ray rendering. I actually show a lot of this process in my tutorials.
These days I don’t play LoL anymore, but I still love the cinematics for this game. And I’ve already watched the “Arcane” series, which I really enjoyed for its style and lighting.
Have you watched it yet? Do you play LoL? =)
The making of the work is HERE
